2012 Frank La Rue : Remarks by Frank La Rue, U.N. special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. 1/18/12: Credit: Jessica McConnell Burt, courtesy of GW Law. Presenter information: The U.N. Human Rights Council appointed Frank La Rue to the post of special rapporteur in March 2008. The position focuses on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. Earlier this year, the Council renewed his mandate until 2014. Mr. La Rue has been involved in the promotion of human rights for 25 years. He is the founder and president of the Center for Legal Action for Human Rights (CALDH) in his native Guatemala. CALDH is a renowned NGO that has brought pioneering human rights cases in Guatemalan courts as well as to the Inter-American Human Rights System. Mr. La Rue has held a number of other important posts as well. He served as presidential commissioner for human rights in Guatemala, as a human rights adviser to the minister of foreign affairs, and as president of the governing board of the Centro-American Institute of Social Democracy Studies. He holds a B.A. in legal and social studies from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, and a post-graduate degree in U.S. foreign policy from Johns Hopkins University. In 2004, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

2011 CLEAF Dodd-Frank : C-LEAF Presents "Dodd-Frank's Future Direction: On Course or Off Track?", Friday, October 21, 2011: GW's Center for Law, Economics & Finance's Third Annual Fall Financial Regulatory Reform Symposium was held in the Jack Morton Auditorium. The daylong event featured two panel discussions dealing with financial regulatory reform topics, including new regulations affecting large, systemically important financial companies and the future of housing finance, as well as question-and-answer sessions. Highlights included the Manuel F. Cohen Memorial Lecture, delivered by Simon Johnson, Ronald A. Kurtz (1954) Professor of Entrepreneurship and Professor of Global Economics and Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and a keynote address by The Hon. Sheila C. 2011 Public Interest Service Day : Incoming GW Law 1Ls volunteered their time to help spruce up D.C.'s Ballou Senior High School in August before the new school year began. At Ballou, students painted, worked in the library (building furniture and installing an electronic ID system in all books), cleaned, and landscaped grounds among other service projects. In the days prior to the service project, students also visited D.C. Superior Court, the Office of Administrative Hearings, the Arlington County Detention Center, and the Youth Services Center, to learn more about the real workings of courts and agencies. The 100 1Ls got a chance to meet one another as well as Dean Paul Schiff Berman, Lerner Family Associate Dean Alan Morrison, Assistant Dean David Johnson, and upper-level students. CLEAF in New York 2011 : (photos by Claire Duggan) C-LEAF hosted its second annual "C-LEAF in New York" set of events with an alumni reception on June 7 and a symposium on hedge fund regulation on June 8. The evening reception at Barclay Towers was co-hosted by alumni and C-LEAF Advisory Board members Margarita "Ari" Brose and Jeff Schweon and the Office of Law Alumni Relations. The next day, C-LEAF hosted "Hedge Fund Regulation and Current Developments," which provided a timely and interesting issue on which to have a discussion with experts and audience members.
